Technical specifications

The Ro-Ro passenger ship, put into service in January 1989, was built at the Schichau Seebeckswerft in Bremerhaven (as "Robin Hood IV") and is powered by four diesel engines. After a conversion in 1993, the ferry operated as "Nils Holgersson V" and was renamed "Tom Sawyer" in 2001. The strict regulations for the sulphur special areas, which include the entire Baltic Sea, have allowed a maximum sulphur content of 0.1% in marine fuels since 2008. M/S Tom Sawyer runs the low-sulphur diesel fuel, which is more expensive than normal marine fuel.
