TT-Line - Official Partner of UNESCO World Engineering Day 2025

TT-Line as Official Partner for UNESCO World Engineering Day 2025
Shaping our Sustainable Future Through Engineering
As a leading shipping company in the field of sustainable transport in the Baltic Sea, between Germany, Sweden, Poland and Lithuania, we have been selected as an official partner for the UNESCO World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development (WED) 2025.
WED is jointly operated by UNESCO and the World Federation for Engineering Organizations (WFEO), which spans some 100 countries and represents more than 30 million engineers and is an International Day proclaimed by UNESCO.
0:07 – Since the company was founded in 1962, we have developed into a leading player in the maritime industry of the Baltic Sea.
0:13 – We pioneered shipping solutions and built a brand that today stands for quality, precision, and environmental awareness.
0:22 – We continuously strive to improve the efficiency and sustainability of our fleet through innovation and forward-thinking actions.
0:31 – Every year, we transport more than 1,000,000 passengers and 500,000 freight units, making us the market leader in direct routes to southern Sweden.
0:40 – Our fleet consists of nine modern ferries operating between Germany, Sweden, Poland, and Lithuania, connecting the European continent with Scandinavia.
0:50 – As a key player in European infrastructure, we see it as our responsibility to actively contribute to the success of the 2030 Agenda and help create a livable future for generations to come.
1:02 – Our main goal is to reduce CO₂ emissions per transport unit by 40% by 2035.
1:11 – Since the beginning of our operations in 1962, we have taken a pioneering role in implementing forward-looking technologies across all areas of activity.
1:23 – On our Germany–Sweden routes, we have already reduced emissions by 35% since 2010.
1:31 – Over the years, we have continuously modernized our ferries – in terms of both comfort and efficiency.
1:39 – For example, the “Tinkerbell” was designed to minimize air resistance above and below the waterline.
1:48 – It was also the first ferry of its kind to be lengthened in a revolutionary way.
1:54 – The vessel was extended by 30 meters to increase passenger and freight capacity – without raising fuel consumption.
2:08 – The Tinkerbell runs on a modern diesel-electric propulsion system: power generation and propulsion can operate independently, allowing the engines to always run in an optimal range. This maximizes efficiency and minimizes particle emissions.
2:25 – Another innovation is the waste heat recovery system on the “Robin Hood,” which generates up to 400 kW of electricity that would otherwise be lost.
2:43 – We also use AI-based software to optimize routes. By factoring in hydrodynamic parameters, weather, and sea conditions, it calculates and continuously adjusts the most efficient course.
3:01 – In 2022, we reached a milestone with the launch of the first LNG-powered Green Ships, “Nils Holgersson” and “Peter Pan.”
3:08 – Both vessels received five stars in the Clean Shipping Index.
3:15 – Using LNG offers significant environmental benefits. It reduces CO₂ emissions from diesel engines by up to 60% and lowers particle emissions per freight unit by 93% annually. Additionally, sulfur oxide emissions are reduced by 98% and nitrogen oxide emissions by 82% – all without the need for complex gas treatment systems. This innovation represents a clean and sustainable approach to energy generation.
3:49 – We are not only pioneers in using LNG in the southern Baltic Sea, but we’ve taken it one step further: we are now able to operate with climate-neutral bio-LNG.
4:02 – By using this fuel, we expect to reduce the CO₂ emissions of our fleet by an additional 2,500 tons by 2025.
4:13 – With the next generation of environmentally friendly ships, we continue to push technological boundaries.
4:21 – We are taking action ourselves – and also offering our customers sustainable options.
4:27 – Our customers can travel 100% CO₂-free by purchasing emission certificates for the use of bio-LNG.
4:41 – We have installed charging stations on our Green Ships to conveniently transport electric vehicles.
4:54 – In doing so, we build trust with our customers and enable environmentally friendly travel across Europe.
5:03 – Through our intermodal network, we seamlessly integrate sea, rail, and road transport.
5:13 – This supports the shift from road to rail and sea transport – resulting in significant CO₂ savings.
5:28 – A major innovation is the shore power supply for our vessels as part of an international initiative called the Green Corridor.
5:33 – In cooperation with the ports of Trelleborg in Sweden and Lübeck in Germany, as well as other maritime industry stakeholders, we are pursuing an ambitious initiative to connect ships to local power grids while docked.
5:52 – This significantly reduces emissions and noise pollution in ports and surrounding areas.
6:00 – The electricity supplied is 100% renewable – generated by wind turbines at the Port of Trelleborg.
6:07 – TT-Line stands for a long history of innovation.
6:10 – With our bio-LNG-powered Green Ships, we are using the most sustainable propulsion solution in our fleet to date.
6:16 – We hope future innovations will enable us to operate ferries of this size entirely with electric power.
6:24 – We are aware of the challenges posed by climate change,
6:30 – take responsibility – and are leading the maritime industry toward a more sustainable future.

Innovations at TT-Line
We are TT-Line, a leading maritime company in the Baltic Sea, dedicated to sustainable transport between Germany, Sweden, Poland, and Lithuania since 1962. With our fleet of nine modern RoPax ferries, we transport over 1 million passengers and 500,000 freight units annually, while actively contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As a key player in European infrastructure, we are committed to Agenda 2030, with a primary goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 40% per transport unit by 2035. Since 2010, we have already achieved a 35% reduction on our Germany-Sweden routes through groundbreaking innovations. By integrating AI-powered voyage optimization, waste heat recovery, and hydrodynamic ship design, we continuously enhance energy efficiency across our fleet.
A major sustainability milestone was reached in 2022 with the launch of our LNG-powered Green Ships, Nils Holgersson and Peter Pan, which have been rated five stars on the Clean Shipping Index. These vessels significantly reduce emissions per transport unit—60% CO2, 93% particulates, and 98% sulfur oxides—and we are going even further by incorporating climate-impact-negative liquefied biogas (Bio-LNG).
Beyond our fleet, we actively promote sustainable mobility by offering CO2-free travel options, providing e-charging stations for electric vehicles, and enhancing our intermodal transport network that shifts freight from roads to rail and sea, significantly lowering emissions. Through The Green Corridor initiative, we are collaborating with ports in Sweden and Germany to connect our vessels to 100% renewable shore power, reducing emissions and noise pollution in harbours.
Our sustainability-driven actions aligns with SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work & Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
Recognizing the challenges of climate change, we are committed to driving Agenda 2030 forward and leading the industry toward a greener future.
Sustainable Development Goals at TT-Line
The operational framework for our company, which is defined by the shipping industry, allows us to influence the success of six of the sustainability goals. Our efforts are therefore focussed precisely where we can make the greatest positive impact.
Through innovation, forward-looking technologies and future-orientated actions, we can effectively influence these six sustainable development goals:
